How often should a piano be tuned?

A frequently asked question with a complicated answer. Surely not less than once a year, regardless of how much (or little) it is played. As humidity changes seasonally (even daily) the wooden components—soundboard, action, case, etc.—shrink or swell, changing dimensions. When the soundboard changes, so does the tuning! To compensate for these changes, periodic tuning and adjustments are required. Developing a “good ear” is an essential part of learning to play the piano, and keeping the tuning up is a necessary part of that training.
